Police Attacking Iyad Harb, May 11, 2004

Introduction

May 11, 2005

On Tuesday, May 11, 2004, two Palestinian Arab men who work as radio reporters for the government owned Arabic-language station Sawt Israel (Voice of Israel) were walking by a bus stop in Jerusalem when one of the men was attacked by a transportation security guard who was posted at the stop. Several more security guards arrived on the scene and joined the first guard in beating the reporter. The victim, Iyad Harb, attributed the security guard’s unprovoked attack to the fact that the two reporters spoke in Arabic. Harb also said that he suspects that the security guard wanted to take out his anger indiscriminately on an Arab because that same day the news had reported that six Israeli soldiers had been killed in Gaza City. After going to the hospital, the two reporters went to the police station to file a complaint against the guards.
